Observations, thoughts and other assorted stuff.

Recently I was in Silver Spring for a work attachments for a duration of about ten days. During the Saturday and Sunday, we visited Washington DC and all the historical monuments and memorials there. I had a really great time.

It's easy to get from Silver Spring to any part of DC, just take the Metro red line. I found the train system to be very similar to that of Singapore's mass rapid transit (MRT).

We took Tourmobile to get around DC and visit all the monuments and memorials. It's $20 for the whole day. The tourmobile goes around DC and makes stops at places of interests and you can get off wherever you want and get on again when the next one comes around. While one is on the Tourmobile, there is a guide onboard to give one a background on the meaning of each site of interest and what to look out for. Really great.

I loved the Franklin D Roosevelt Memorial. It's a beautiful garden with sculptures and stone carved inscriptions of Roosevelt's quotes in black stone. I thought the Jefferson Memorial was magnificent and very meaningful. Lincoln Memorial was really something and had a great view of the Washington memorial. I've seen these places on TV or in magazines, but I never thought they were so incredible a site when you visit it in real life. It was all in a word, awesome.

We saw the White House from the gates - there were no more tours conducted within since 9/11 which was a great pity I thought. We visited the grounds of the US Capitol, and also visited Arlington National Cemetery. The changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was very touching. Such beautiful places.

We visited the Iwo Jima Memorial which a little of out of the way, but worth the bit of walk to see it. I never thought it was that huge. I also like the Korean War Memorial - where they had statues of soldiers out on field patrol. It was amazing. Part of the Wall (Vietnam War Memorial) was closed for some upgrading. I was a little disappointed by that.

I really enjoyed the tour and found it very meaningful.

(This is just the first of a few articles I shall be talking about my first ever trip to the US. )
